Dear Friends & Family,
As many of you know, for the past 2 years, I have been volunteering my time for a wonderful organization called iMentor. iMentor NYC is a non-profit school-based mentoring program that partners with public schools to provide each of their students with a college-educated mentor for three to four years. Students work with their mentors one-on-one, in-person and online, to develop strong personal relationships, nurture a college aspiration, navigate the college application process, and build critical skills that lead to college success.
My mentoring experience started in Fall 2011 with Katherin, who at the time was a Junior at Civic Leadership Academy in Queens. Katherin comes from a single-parent immigrant family and dreams of becoming an EMT. During our match, we went through many ups and downs together as we dealt with a series of personal trials and academic challenges. Currently I am working with Katherin to help her pass her remaining state Regents exams so she can enroll in college this fall. This year, I am matched in a 3 year college success program with Floralma, a Junior at Kipp College Prep in Harlem. Like Katherin, Floralma also comes from an immigrant family. More importantly, Katherin and Floralma represent part of the 89% of students in iMentor that will be the first from their families to go to college. Seeing them grow and excel has been an eye opening experience for me and I am so proud to have this opportunity to serve as a positive force in their lives.
But this isn’t just about me and my mentee – this year alone, iMentor will match 2,400 students with 2,400 mentors in 19 public high schools in New York City. My experience with iMentor means so much to me that I’ve decided to participate in the Online Donor Drive, a campaign that helps iMentor raise crucial funds to continue their transformative work. I hope you will consider making a gift to support this important cause.
It costs $1,000 a year to support a pair and ensure they have access to quality programming and resources. So whether you contribute $10 or $1,000, your involvement makes you part of a network of individuals who are making a lasting investment in the life of a high school student. Did you know that 83% of seniors in our iMentor NYC program graduated from high school in 2011, compared to a citywide graduation rate of 65%? And 74% of graduates from our College Transition Program enrolled in college in 2011.
My fundraising goal is $1,000. You can click "Donate to this Fundraiser" to donate quickly and securely. Please also consider donating through your company if it matches donations made to charities. Be sure to let me know if you donate through your company so I can keep count for the goal. Your gift will help iMentor create and sustain more mentoring relationships like mine. Thank you in advance for your support!
