THE STORY:

RAFIKI VIDEO : Click through photos on left to see video

For this year's run I would like to highlight the dogs of Kitten Rescue, known as the KR K-9s. People generally don't think of Kitten Rescue as the first place to go to adopt dogs, but they are becoming an increasingly bigger portion of our rescue efforts. Although dog rescue is ~10% of our efforts, our dogs receive the same high level of care that Kitten Rescue is known for. As most dog owners know, vets charge "by the pound" for dogs, thus our medical expenses have increased considerably. Please help us continue our dog rescue efforts by donating to Kitten Rescue.

I am also running for a very special foster cat named Rafiki (see photos and video on left). Rafiki is a 10 year old white Persian who was horribly neglected and then abandoned by his family. In a strange twist of fate, that day was a lucky day for Rafiki because he crossed paths with KR volunteer, Belinda. Belinda took him in and got him the medical attention he so desperately needed. Rafiki has severe allergies that caused him to scratch off all of the hair on his face. He also had ear infections and was quite malnourished. Rafiki is being treated for his conditions and has to be on a special hypoallergenic diet. He is doing amazingly well and is ready for adoption. Rafiki is currently at my home being fostered by my daughter, Hannah. Hannah felt compelled to help him when she saw his pitiful little face.

As a final note, I am also dedicating my run to my collie mix, Sandy. Sandy died on Nov 21, 2012 at age 15.5 after suffering a stroke. I rescued Sandy in 1997, the day before she was scheduled to be euthanized due to fear aggression issues. I took her home and she was the best dog I've ever had, being a loving and loyal companion to both her human, feline, and canine family members.

What is Kitten Rescue?  Kitten Rescue is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that was founded in 1997, and that has now grown into one of the most respected animal welfare groups in Los Angeles. Each year, our volunteers place over 1,000 cats and dogs into new homes. Since our inception, we have placed over 12,000 animals into loving homes! [To see where the cats we save come from, please click here.]

Who are our volunteers? Kitten Rescue is comprised of dedicated volunteers who devote much of their time to helping homeless animals, while juggling their own families, jobs, and lives as best as they can! At any given time you may find them bottle feeding orphaned kittens, nursing sick dogs and cats to health, visiting high-kill shelter to save whoever possible, running back and forth to veterinary clinics, trapping feral cats for spay/neuter, feeding feral cats, taming feral kittens, rehabilitating animals with behavioral issues, taking foster animals to adoption events, or delivering animals to their forever homes.

Why sponsor Team Kitten Rescue? Because you will be helping save the lives of cats and dogs who would otherwise not have a chance. Kitten Rescue relies on donations from the public to save the animals and pay for their veterinary care. The more money we raise, the more lives we can save! So please sponsor Team Kitten Rescue today. If you know one of our team members, you can donate directly on his/her individual crowdrise page, and the amount will reflect on this page as well. Since we are a 501c3, donations made to Kitten Rescue are tax-deductible.

For more information, please go to our website at www.kittenrescue.org/LAMarathon or e-mail us directly at lamarathon@kittenrescue.org.
