BENEFITING: Kitten Rescue
ORGANIZER: Kitten Rescue
EVENT: 2014 ASICS LA Marathon
EVENT DATE: Mar 09, 2014
Kitten Rescue is a very special organization which continues to impress and amaze me with it's dedication, compassion, and willingness to go above and beyond for the ones no one else would even consider. We don't cherry-pick our rescues or take only highly adoptable, adorable kittens - though we do have lots of those as well!!
In 2013, a cat was discovered in a box outside a shelter, his paws and face wrapped in duct tape so that he could barely even breathe. Amigo, as he was named, is a rehabilitation project - so scared of people that he was referred to as feral by many. This cat was taken in by Kitten Rescue and is slowly but surely relearning to trust again. He may live forever in foster care, but all that matters to KR is that he is safe, loved, and will never have to be in a situation like he was found in ever again.
Another amazing rescue is a pair of crippled kittens whose bones are so twisted and misshappen that they can barely move around. These tiny angels are being bottle fed and cared for while most would have just let them die. However long their time on this world is, they will be loved, warm, well fed, and happy. The odds of them ever being adopted are next to nothing, but the bottom line is that they didn't die in agony, all alone without ever knowing love.
In my own fosters, I've had many loving kittens come and go. And I've also suffered personal foster losses as well as losses among my network. Splat, a 6 month old hit-by-car rescue, passed in my arms the day of the 2013 5K after suffering uncontrolable seizures. August 18th saw Ollie, a 4 month old rescued from Long Beach at 4 weeks, pass in my arms after the diagnosis of wet FIP as his belly swelled unbelievably from fluid. But I also saw Rajan, a 1 year old Siamese rescued before the 2013 marathon, go from near death from starvation to leaping to the top of his kitty tree in the loving forever home.
The heartbreak is outweighed by the rescues that find homes and flourish. But none of it is possible without Kitten Rescue and it's volunteers. The medical expenses are incredible and we don't shy from medical cases. Every dollar donated goes directly to the care of our rescues. I'm doing my part - now it's your turn to do yours. Donate. Share. Foster. Adopt. Fundraise. Run. Walk.
What is Kitten Rescue? Kitten Rescue is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that was founded in 1997, and that has now grown into one of the most respected animal welfare groups in Los Angeles. Each year, our volunteers place over 1,000 cats and dogs into new homes. Since our inception, we have placed over 12,000 animals into loving homes! [To see where the cats we save come from, please click here.]
Who are our volunteers? Kitten Rescue is comprised of dedicated volunteers who devote much of their time to helping homeless animals, while juggling their own families, jobs, and lives as best as they can! At any given time you may find them bottle feeding orphaned kittens, nursing sick dogs and cats to health, visiting high-kill shelter to save whoever possible, running back and forth to veterinary clinics, trapping feral cats for spay/neuter, feeding feral cats, taming feral kittens, rehabilitating animals with behavioral issues, taking foster animals to adoption events, or delivering animals to their forever homes.
Why sponsor Team Kitten Rescue? Because you will be helping save the lives of cats and dogs who would otherwise not have a chance. Kitten Rescue relies on donations from the public to save the animals and pay for their veterinary care. The more money we raise, the more lives we can save! So please sponsor Team Kitten Rescue today. If you know one of our team members, you can donate directly on his/her individual crowdrise page, and the amount will reflect on this page as well. Since we are a 501c3, donations made to Kitten Rescue are tax-deductible.
Why join Team Kitten Rescue? Because the animals need you! If you walk or run the marathon for Team Kitten Rescue, you will be able to raise money to save the lives of homeless cats and dogs. And if this will be your first marathon, we assure you that it will be an incredibly rewarding and transformational experience. So it's a win-win for you and the animals. And no experience is necessary! So whether you are a seasoned marathoner or a couch potato who has never exercised, we would love to have you on our team. And for added fun, we'll have PRIZES for all team members!
