Imagine you are awaiting the birth of your baby (in our case, our 1st), just to be told that there was something very wrong with your baby's heart, that your baby will likely be taken away from you in the delivery room before you get a chance to hold him, so he can be stabilized and readied for the first of many open heart surgeries he faces; surgeries necessary in order for him to live. We were among the lucky ones; we learned of Landon's heart defect, HLHS, before he was born; were able to make a plan for where he would be born (thousands of miles from our home); we were able to hand pick his care team and I *was* able to hold him for just a moment before he was whisked away to the hospital next door. We remain among the lucky ones. Landon is with us today and getting ready to celebrate his 8th birthday! Because of a few determined doctors, the surgeries that have kept Landon here for me to hug, watch grow and see his huge blue eyes light up when he smiles, have only been available for fewer than 30 years...but it all started with research. Awareness and research save lives! It has saved my son's life...so far. Much more needs to be learned, many more advances need to be made, but research takes money, and we need your help!! Who knows what the next 30 years will bring, but I hope it is huge!
