BENEFITING: LOS ANGELES YOUTH NETWORK LA YOUTH NETWORK
Unfortunately, thousands of youth sleep on the streets each year in our own community. In fact, it is estimated that nearly 10,000 youth under the age of 24 end up homeless each year in Los Angeles County. Thousands more are neglected by overburdened and overwrought public systems. These kids haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy a childhood. They have experienced severe traumas over long periods of time. Once they turn to the streets, they enter into a constant state of survival mode, trying to make it work from one minute to the next. Their lives, in a word, are chaos.
LAYN has a proven track record of success in working with this population of youth. As one of the only shelters licensed to care for youth 12-17, we perform a vital service in Los Angeles. Last year, we provided nearly 10,000 bed nights to youth in need of shelter. We reached over 2,000 youth and provided more than 35,000 meals to youth through street outreach and shelter placement. We’ve shown homeless and foster adolescents that they, too, can dream-that they, too, deserve a sense of dignity and self-confidence.
LAYN’s mission is to empower abused, neglected and homeless adolescents to become self-sufficient. It is our belief that to achieve this, the community must be engaged. We, as an agency, must provide the highest quality support services and housing. We must also engage other agencies, law enforcement, families, neighbors, youth and friends to mobilize and more importantly -to ACT. We do this so that every child can experience a meaningful life free of abuse, neglect and trauma.
We invite you to join us in our efforts BY HELPING us engage, care for, and prepare these youth for self-sufficiency.
