Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
I'm thrilled to be running the 5K in support of Lupus LA for the second year in a row. At age 16, I was diagnosed with lupus. I had a tightness in my chest, headaches and joint pain and was incredibly lucky to get diagnosed with lupus very early on in my illness. Lupus is rare in men (only 10% of lupus patients are men) and even more rare is that, in my case, it affected my lungs.
My entire family, has passionately joined the fight against lupus. Twelve years ago, I helped form Lupus LA with world-renowned lupus doctor, Dr. Daniel Wallace. Laurie joined the team when we met and has become actively involved in Lupus LA's many events. Lupus LA is now the top lupus organization on the west coast and has raised millions of dollars for lupus research along with tremendous awareness through its ties to Hollywood.
Running the 5K is something that I never really thought about - my lupus, while under control, still affects my lungs and therefore makes cardio exercise a challenge. However, as a result of Laurie's encouragement, I finished the 5K last year and am determined to better my time this year. I will be completing this 5K in honor of all those who fight lupus everyday.
Although lupus affects nearly 1.5 million Americans and millions more worldwide, it is the least known major disease in this country and is very difficult to diagnose. Lupus is just now getting more attention and just had the first new drug approved for treatment in nearly 50 years, which I've been taking now for 5 months. The money we raise will help continue very promising research, and I am so pleased that you have now decided to join our fight.
Thank you for your contribution and wish me luck in the 5K!
