My grandma was great. She made cookies and jam and perogies. She handed out smarties like they were going out of style and she always, always, always had something nice to say. To be honest, she didn’t have an impressive resume; she didn’t travel the world or start a company or even head the PTA. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t worth celebrating.
My grandma was absolutely a run-of-the-mill grandma. She baked, she hugged, she smiled, and gave. She gave us everything she could and everything we asked for. My grandma was perfectly average and that’s why I think she deserves this tribute. Every day people are diagnosed with cancer – and I think it’s important to remember: it’s not just professional athletes and revolutionary politicians that are diagnosed with this really shitty disease. More often than not, it’s people like my grandma, people that have families and small social circles and average lives and remarkable spirits. If we forget to remember the run-of-the-mill grandmas, we keep cancer at a distance. If we forget that cancer can come into any home at any time, it becomes an idea, something that happens to other people but not to us. Well it sucks, but it can happen to anyone, even average, every day grandmas like mine.
You know it’s a worthy cause so please help us support cancer research. Without the support of us everyday people, the world has no shot at beating this disease.
