The Kenyan government only provides free access to education through the primary grades (K-8). Beyond primary school, students or their families must pay all fees associated with their schooling. Countless bright, eager students are kept from furthering their education simply they cannot pay these fees.
When Rebecca was very young, her father was murdered, leaving her mother to care for Rebecca and her six brothers and sisters. Because of the financial strain, Rebecca and her siblings saw little hope in studying past free primary school. Despite all this, Rebecca worked very hard in her classes and landed herself at Daraja!
Rebecca loves Daraja because she is always welcomed to campus with warmth, love, and happiness. She can’t choose between math and science as her favorite subject because she loves them both. Her scores have consistently landed her among the top of her class, and she’s an outstanding runner. During her second year at Daraja, Rebecca ran 21 kilometer race and came in as the second female finisher. She is excited to develop her running skills and loves spending time with her friends.
For the last three years, Rebecca has placed in the top five finishers of Daraja's Bay to Breakers Race. Will this year make it number four?
Please consider supporting Rebecca as she runs to raise money for her own education on May 17th in Kenya, while many Daraja supporters are running in the annual San Francisco Bay to Breakers race in solidarity.
