I am running my first marathon! And it's for an amazing cause. As you all know, I work for MGH on the pediatric floor. We care for children with cancer and their families every day. If you support any of the following: me, running, children, children with cancer, the fight against cancer, or MGH, I hope that you will donate. Anything is appreciated!
In addition to running for the many children fighting cancer at MGH and around the world, I am proud to be running in honor and memory of Meg James.
When I applied to run the marathon I had to answer why I wanted to be on the MGH team and this is what I wrote:
I work as an RN on the pediatric floor at MGH. We care for children with cancer every day. I have developed many bonds with patients and families that are fighting cancer on a daily basis and it becomes a part of you. I feel that I fight with them every day. I would like to run for all of the patients and families that continue to fight every day, those that have won the fight and those that lost the long battle. I recently cared for a young adolescent girl who lost her fight. As a fairly new nurse, it was the first time that a patient I was close to and fought for passed away. I keep her mass card on my refrigerator and think of her every day as I continue the fight with each new cancer patient. I will run for her and her family. There was also another older adolescent who I took care of and was primary on his team. He had a hemipelvectomy for pelvic osteosarcoma which is a debilitating surgery. We worked every day towards rehab and recovery and were able to send him home to Vermont to rehab there. I recently found out that he has lung metastases and his prognosis is not good. I will run for him and his family. In the town that I grew up in there is a man who taught gym class all through my elementary education and later coached me in high school track. This summer, his very young daughter lost her battle with leukemia. I will run for her and her family. And I will raise as much money as I possibly can to support the researchers who continue to fight for a cure for pediatric cancer. I would also very much like to support the child life program which in my opinion is one of the greatest creations in the world. They are amazing people who perform miracles every day by making the children smile and laugh and forget for even just a moment what they are dealing with. In addition to all of this, this will be my first marathon although I have run several half marathons. This will be a huge accomplishment for me. I would be honored and proud to run for the MGH pediatric cancer team.

The Mass General Marathon Team Fighting Kids' Cancer ... One Step at a Time was established in 1998 and has raised nearly $8 million in support of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at MassGeneral Hospital for Children. Thanks to the generous support of John Hancock Financial and other partners, we will continue to run until we find a cure … One Step at a Time.
