EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
Many people say that when it comes to endurance sports (triathlons, marathons, etc.), you do one race and you are either hooked or cured. Well I, my friends, am surely hooked…first it was triathlons, and now I’ve moved on to marathons. My first marathon was the super hilly Cape Cod Marathon this fall. With blasting headwinds during the last few miles, I literally finished it by focusing on one agonizing step at a time. But when I did finish…I knew I wanted more!
And I will be getting much more come April 15th. Rather than running this next marathon just for myself, I am honored to be running the Boston Marathon this year for the Mass General Marathon Team Fighting Kids' Cancer ... One Step at a Time. The Mass General Marathon Team Fighting Kids' Cancer ... One Step at a Time was established in 1998 and has raised nearly $8 million in support of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Mass General Hospital.
The life of an endurance athlete is so often a solitary venture, but, while on this team, I get to be a part of something much bigger than myself. As I said earlier, I am hooked on endurance sports, but the money I raise for the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Division at Mass General Hospital for Children will get us all one step closer to a cure.
According to my calculations, I estimate that I will take about 52,400 steps during the Boston Marathon. I have also calculated that each one of my steps is worth 10 cents. If I raise just 10 cents a step, the MGH Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Division will receive $5,240 to support its research. Indeed, the money I raise per step I take during the Boston Marathon directly funds the steps MGH will take towards kids’ cancer cures.
