BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
Dear Friends and Family,
Our MGH Marathon Team 2013 includes 105 runners who are passionate about our cause and have been training hard for the Boston Marathon on April 15. This will be the 16th year since we established the MGH Marathon Team "Fighting Kid's Cancer.....One Step at a Time". We have been fortunate to get our charity numbers each year from John Hancock Financial. With their partnership, we have raised almost eight million dollars for the childhood cancer program at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children. It didn't take much convincing this year to get me to lace up my running shoes for another marathon. Inspiration from my patients and your support will get me to the finish line for the 23rd time.
As you know, each year I dedicate my Marathon run to a friend, family member or one of my patients. Two years ago I ran in honor of a 7-year-old girl named Alexandra, who had leukemia. Alexandra was one of the most gifted youngsters that I have had the privilege to care for. She always brightened my day, made me laugh, and was adored by everyone. Sadly, Alexandra died this past summer after enduring a second bone marrow transplant. Her memory and spirit will be with me every step of the way during my marathon run. I will also be running to honor my patient Carson, who recently completed treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma. Carson is awesome. He is a sophomore in high school and loves to play squash. Being a humble young man, he forgot to tell me about his high national ranking in squash. Carson kept up his grades and great attitude during therapy, played squash for his school team, and is now back on the tournament circuit. Thinking about Alexandra and Carson will more than motivate me to get to the finish line.
Thank you for your steadfast support of my marathon run and your confidence in our work in the childhood cancer program at MGHfC. Each and every one of our patients and their families are very appreciative of your help. We continue to make great strides toward our goal of curing all children with cancer.
You can sponsor my run online
or make a check payable to the Mass General Hospital and send it to Dr. Howard Weinstein, MGHfC, 55 Fruit Street, Yawkey 8B-8893, Boston, MA 02114.
I hope to see you on Marathon Monday, April 15, 2013.
Best wishes, Howard
