BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
Running the Boston Marathon has been an aspiration of mine since I watched my dad cross the finish line 15 years ago.
At age 10 I felt a pain in my side. My mom took me to the doctor, who sent me to have an x-ray. After several tests it was decided that I should go to Massachusetts General Hospital, a place I was lucky enough to call my second home for the next year of my life.
On April 18th, 1998 I was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a bone cancer. A mass the size of a grapefruit had taken over several of my ribs. The day after my diagnosis was Marathon Monday and my doctor at MGH, Howard Weinstein, was running the Boston Marathon for one of his patients. That same day, my dad said to me, “If you will fight this cancer for the next year, then I will train for the marathon and next year we will cross the finish line together”.
After undergoing an aggressive regimen of chemotherapy to shrink the tumor, I had surgery to remove the tumor along with 5 ribs. It left me with an awesome hockey stick shaped scar on my left side. Over the next 12 months, Howard Weinstein oversaw every step of my care. And guess what…IT WORKED! I was cancer free as I watched my dad and doctor run the 1999 Boston Marathon and together we crossed the finish line.
MGH holds a very special place in my heart and I am thrilled to be able to give back to an important cause by running the Boston Marathon as a part of the Mass General Hospital Team Fighting Kids’ Cancer…One Step at a Time. I am asking for your help by supporting a cause that saved my life and will hopefully save many more children like me.
I hope you will join me in the fight against childhood cancer by donating to this incredible cause!
