MILES FOR MARTIN 2013 IS OFF AND RUNNING!
Those of you who know me well, know that I run in part because I was inspired by an amazing runner and friend who completed 40 consecutive Boston Marathons from 1970 until 2009. Martin Duffy was a lifelong resident of Massachusetts (Fall River and Belmont, with a short stint at Penn for grad school), a fabulous runner and coach, and an all-around amazing person. He ran his 40th Boston two months after a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. The doctors at Mass General Hospital took unbelievably good care of him, even when it was clear that his cancer was one of the ugly ones that doesn't respond to the treatments we have available today. When I ran last year's Boston in 87-degree weather, this mantra kept me going: "This is hard, but chemo is harder - so I will keep going for Martin and for the children who benefit from our fundraising work." Then I ran the California International Marathon in a torrential downpour with wind gusts - while remembering that Martin's first Boston in 1970 was also a cold and rainy outing. We run to stay healthy and strong, to remember our friends, and in honor of cancer patients who, God willing, have their entire lives ahead of them because of the work of hospitals like MGH. Please join us in contributing to this cause. And then, go out for a run, or a walk, or whatever form of exercise makes you smile. And look up once in a while, as I do, because I know Martin Duffy is up there cheering all of us on.

The Mass General Marathon Team Fighting Kids' Cancer ... One Step at a Time was established in 1998 and has raised nearly $8 million in support of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at MassGeneral Hospital for Children. Thanks to the generous support of John Hancock Financial and other partners, we will continue to run until we find a cure … One Step at a Time.
