I'm running the NYC Marathon to help raise money for the YMCA's Strong Kids Campaign, which helps fund the tons of scholarships given by the YMCA to local kids and families who are actively trying to live healthier, better lives but can't afford the programs on their own.
When I joined the Y a few years ago, I had no idea they had so much to offer. I joined for the treadmill and pool, but after a few visits I realized that the gym was only a SMALL part of what the Y does.
The YMCA is about healthy living. This means education, classes, scholarships, community development, family programs and so much more. The Y is a place where kids come after school to hang out, do homework, take classes, learn sports and connect with their community. It is a home and a family and a springboard for healthy living. I was happy to be even a peripheral part of it.
But I wanted my experience to be more than just a run on the treadmill. I wanted to get involved with the good the YMCA was doing. So I joined the Board of Managers, where I'm developing online marketing channels to help the Y continue to integrate with the community. But after attending my first few board events and hearing first-hand stories about how the Y has helped save lives, get kids off drugs and into college, I was compelled to do more than just lend my marketing experience. So I joined the Marathon Team as a fundraiser, hoping to finally contribute something real (and to finally get in shape!).
Now I am asking my friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances to help me raise $3,000 for the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign. Our money will go directly to the scholarships that help make lives better.
Thank you for your support!!
And the official word from the YMCA of Greater New York:
Team McBurney is running in the 2011 ING Marathon raising fund for the Strong Kids Campaign!
They're Counting on Us... Contributions to the YMCA's annual Strong Kids Campaign ensure that no child or family is turned away from life-enhancing YMCA programs because of the inability to pay. Each year, the YMCA of Greater New York provides financial assistance to tens of thousands of local youth and families in need. These requests are now rising to unprecedented levels. The YMCA of Greater New York, through its annual fund-raising, wants to be there to meet them.
We're Counting on You... The YMCA exists to promote the healthy development of all kids and their families regardless of their financial means. Our goal this year is $6.0 million. Each dollar contributed to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign goes directly to making YMCA programs and membership available to those in need.
