EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
Our son Cole was born 6 years ago with Down syndrome. We hadn't known before Cole's birth that he would have Down syndrome so the fact that Cole came into the world 6 weeks premature, coupled with an emergency c-section and then with the surprise of the Down syndrome diagnosis.......needelss to say it was an emotional night.
I always say and will continue to say that I wish I had know then what I know now. There are not enough wonderful things to say about Cole. His personality shines through from the first second he looks at you with those amazing eyes. His smile captures your heart and his enthusiasm for things that we take for granted is so admirable.
I had a small surgery this week and Cole was so fixed on becoming a doctor so that he could fix me and make me all better. There has been numerous kisses to my belly (where my incision is) gentle hugs and reminders that he is going to be a doctor and fix me.
Cole went to a school last year that didn't turn out to be the best spot for him. It was a struggle to get him there each day, because school suddenly was a place he did not want to be......BUT....when his 3 year old sister Maddy started going to that school, Cole decided that he wanted to go back there so "he could protect Maddy"
There are endless stories like this about Cole and they all end the same way: with the listener reaching out, tears in their eyes, and hugging Cole so tightly because of the emotion he sets forth.
Every day there are new families that welcome their baby with Down syndrome into the world. Some not knowing, and some having the time to go through all the normal emotions ahead of time. Whatever the situation, I know that these families will have one emotion that rings strong and true through it all and that is LOVE.
Thank you to everyone that has supported my running the Boston Marathon for the past three years in honor of Cole and in honor of the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress. Because of all your support and generosity, you have given me a stage to help show people, who may not understand the GIFT of Down syndrome, what it truly is about.
GO TEAM MDSC!!!!
