Back in 1994, after a work related injury severed my spine in two places, a doctor at a reknowned Atlanta-area hospital had the balls to tell me that I would never walk again. I disagreed with him. Plus-- I didn't like the way that my wheelchair handled. After almost a year and a half of intensive physical therapy, I DID begin to walk again, albeit with the assistance of forearm crutches. I did not get to shed those for several more months. When I eventually started running again (very slowly), I wanted to set another goal for myself. And one of the "loftiest" goals that a runner in the US can set for himself or herself is to run a marathon in all 50 states. That is MY goal. But being the realistic person that I am, I knew that at my very slow pace I would never get to qualify for the Boston Marathon solely on the basis of my speed (or lack thereof). So after doing some research I found that I could raise money for some very worthwhile charities. One of those charities is the Meb Foundation. The Meb Foundation helps raise money to help establish after school programs for at-risk kids. If you've lived in or near a city like Atlanta all your life, you KNOW that there is a dire need for such a charity. So by donating to my page, you can do two things: 1) You can help establish programs that assist kids and their families, both physically and academically. And 2) You can help me accomplish my "lofty" goal of running a marathon in all 50 states with the ability to run in the Grandaddy of all Marathons.
My goal is to raise $4000. If you want... donate $2 per mile. That's only $52.40 for the race. OK. What the heck. Just round it up to $53. It all adds up in the end. Now we all know that deadlines are important, especially when raising money for charity. IF you are going to give (and I hope that you do), I have to have a total of $3000 collected by March the 9th and the total of $4000 collected by April the 9th. So please... don't wait until the last minute.
