EVENT: 2015 Newport Marathon (R.I.)
EVENT DATE: Oct 11, 2015
Hej, gang! Welcome to my new internet page. Great things are happening here, see!
This October, I will run in the Newport Marathon. I've been a dedicated runner since joining my high school's cross country team in 2004, but this will be my first marathon ever. I am excited about the challenge, the beautiful seaside route, and the prospect of celebrating completion of this marathon with copious amounts of pizza and all my favorite fall beers.
I am also using this ocassion to raise funds for the great nonprofit where I work. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center was founded in 1922 and has continually evolved to meet the varied, intertwined, changing needs of Newport County's vulnerable residents. Those less familiar with Newport probably know it best for its Gilded Age mansions and robust yachting community, but that reputation often belies the modesty of this community. Residents are primarily employed in blue-collar jobs, hospitality, retail, or the military, and community copes with the 5th-highest poverty rate in Rhode Island.
The MLK currently has three main program areas: Hunger Services, Education, and Community Programming. It operates the highest-volume food pantry in Newport County, distributing 179,000 meals to more than 2,400 people in 2014--up from 144,000 meals in 2013. Its Education Programs offer affordable Preschool, Afterschool, and Summer Camp to working families, 60% receive DHS support. Community Programs empower clients and promtoe self-advocacy through workshops and classes for adults on a range of topics including, financial literacy, Medicare and Medicaid, physical fitness, nutrition, avoiding fraud, and more.
