The 2011 NYC Marathon will be my seventh marathon - and I'm making this one special by running for Team MSF, to fundraise for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)!
I have been a runner since high school, and more importantly, I have been proud to work for MSF since 2006. Among many things about MSF that make me proud, I like to point out that "we hit the ground running."
I saw that efficiency in action last November when I joined one of MSF's emergency cholera response teams in Saint Marc, Haiti. The team had arrived the day after a cholera case was confirmed and began setting up a cholera treatment center (CTC) right away. Dedicated outreach teams hiked on foot to remote communities in the mountains to conduct trainings, raise awareness, and set up temporary rehydration points for sick people who might not reach a CTC in time.
In Saint Marc and dozens of other sites throughout the country, MSF doctors, nurses, and paramedicals treated more than 100,000 cholera patients during the worst of the outbreak. With cholera, rapid treatment saves lives. It was amazing to see people who had been carried in to the CTC, on the brink of death, recovering and walking around just a day or two later.
This is just one example of the work MSF is doing around the world, every day - in places you have heard about, like the nutritional crisis that is ravaging Somalia, or treating the wounded in Libya, and in crises that don't make the news, like the ongoing conflict in Central African Republic or battling a measles outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Please join me in supporting this important humanitarian work by making a donation to MSF. A marathon is "only" 26.2 miles to run...with your help I can make it go much further to provide essential medical assistance to people in need around the world. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
About Doctors Without Borders
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care in nearly 70 countries. A private, non-profit organization, Doctors Without Borders was founded in 1971 as the first non-governmental organization to both provide emergency medical assistance and bear witness publicly to the plight of people it assists.
