BENEFITING: COMMITTEE AGAINST ANTI ASIAN VIOLEN CE
EVENT: Take Steps for Chinatown
EVENT DATE: Sep 08, 2012
Community development that is shaped by and firmly rooted in community visions & needs is tragically rare when profit-driven development reigns. But thanks to years of campaigning by CAAAV and a tremendous coalition of organizations, Chinatown and LES residents have succeeded in securing community voice representation in waterfront development! So let's celebrate and support the work that places those voices at the forefront of city planning as a norm rather than an exception-- in Chinatown and beyond!
Also, aren't narwhals great?
More Info about the event:
Join CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities on Saturday, September 8th, 2012 for our TAKE STEPS FOR CHINATOWN fundraiser walk-a-thon in support of community empowerment and healthy communities. On September Take Steps for Chinatown is an event celebrating the success of Chinatown residents in ensuring that community voices were represented in the development of the East River Waterfront in New York City.
Participants will form teams to walk the length of the waterfront, learn more about the campaign that brought community voices to the development process, and support ongoing efforts to increase community input in the planning of our neighborhood. The event will start at the basketball courts on Rutgers Slip and South Street, right on the waterfront. Registration begins at 9:30am, and the program will officially start at 11am. Join us for a day of live music, recreational activities, and community building. Lower East Side and Chinatown residents and organizations will be available to share the organizing history around this precious public space.
