BENEFITING: THE VERMONT CENTER FOR ECOSTUDIES INC

EVENT: Birdathon 2015

EVENT DATE: May 21, 2015

THE STORY:

For an update and results scroll to the bottom!!! There's still time to help me meet my goal!

While the Green Mountain Goatsuckers scour Vermont, Team North Dakota (aka Jason Hill) will be searching the prairies and pockets of forest to see as many species of birds as I can. The Birdathon is an annual fund raising event to support the innovative research that we conduct at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies, and it's just a fun way to raise awareness (and a little bit of money) for our conservation and research efforts.

Over the next couple of years my crews and I will be deploying geolocators (visible in a couple of the photos that I uploaded) onto several grassland bird species, including Grasshopper Sparrows (that's the bird I'm holding in most of the photos--the other bird is an Upland Sandpiper). These tiny tracking devices estimate the bird's lat/long based on the timing of the sunrise and sunset, bascially, and they will help us investigate Grasshopper Sparrow migration routes and over-wintering areas. It just snowed on us on Monday, May 18, but the warblers are starting to pass through on their way up to the Canadian boreal forest! I will be chasing some great birds on my study plots and the nearby wetlands including American Advocet, Upland Sandpiper, Marbled Godwit, Chestnut-collared Longspur, and maybe even a Yellow Rail (if I am really lucky). If the weather cooperates I might see 70 species.

Your donation will go a long way towards supporting the conservation work and research activities of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies. All donations are 100% tax-deductable and even $5 would be awesome! Check back here on Friday to find out how I did. Check out some of our boots-on-the-ground conservation and research projects here: http://vtecostudies.org/projects/

RESULTS:

Thank you everyone for your overwhelming support! I was able to see 129 species in North Dakota and I raised $465 of my $500 goal for our conservation and research projects! There's still time to throw in $5!!! For those in wonder, I had to go visit my study plots yesterday so to minimize my carbon footprint I just birded every clump of trees and wetland along the way and back. From the attached figure you can see that I chased birds for over 800 minutes yesterday starting at 0530 in the dark. Some of the many highlights include Baird's Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo, Mourning Warbler, Virginia Rail, and Marsh Wren.
