There are as many as 18 suicides per day among all U.S. veterans, and a veteran is 12 times more likely to die by his or her own hand after leaving the military than to be killed in action by an enemy combatant while on active duty. In addition, estimates show more than 300,000 veterans are suffering from combat trauma, and 75% of these men and women will not receive adequate treatment. Combined with their parents, significant others and children, 1.5 million Americans are deeply affected by the aftermath of war.
What is Not Alone?
Not Alone’s concern is for those suffering the more common, but less recognized war trauma: the invisible psychological wounds of war. Not Alone, a company of Centerstone, is a national not-for-profit organization that provides confidential, no-cost support and services to soldiers, combat veterans and their loved ones impacted by combat stress and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I am the mother of three children; two sons actively serving in the US Marine Corps and a daughter leaving for boot camp at MCRD Parris Island SC January 28, 2013. My oldest son just returned from Afghanistan where his Batallion lost four great Marines. Just as sad were those Marines that served alongside of them and returned home; keeping their experiences buried deep within; staying silent of what they had seen. It is my hope that you will support me in raising awareness of Not Alone, Inc. and help spread their message to help our troops return home and experience the love and support they and their families need to adapt and overcome such tragedy.
On March 9, 2013, I plan to participate in the 5th Annual March Meltdown in Polson Montaa. This is my first 5k of 2013 and I will be sporting my Team Not Alone shirt as well as raising awareness to my fundraiser during the interim. I hope that you will join my team regardless of your location and help raise awareness in your own area of this much needed organization. You can walk, run, hike, bike, climb, crawl; whatever you do best! So what are you waiting for? LET'S GO!
