Running has not always been my thing. In fact I hated it in elementary school, especially on the day we had to run a mile in PE. You see I was born almost three months early. My right lung collapsed when I was only days old and I spent a total of two months in the hospital before being sent home. I was also diagnosed with cerebral palsy, most likely caused by the collapse of my lung. Fortunately, the paralysis only affects some of my motor skills on my left side.
Last year I started running on the elliptical at the gym. In the beginning it was only for 15 minutes and a mile at the most. Then gradually I worked my way up to 20 minutes and now I can do almost 3 miles in 30 minutes.
I finally ran my first 5K in December of last year. Even though it took me almost an hour to finish, (let me just say running on the elliptical and running outside are two different animals) it was one of the most exciting and emotional moments for me. To go from hating running my whole life, to accomplishing something I never thought possible was amazing.
I have walked the OKC Memorial 5K in the past, but this year I plan to run it. I hope to better my time, but more importantly to run for those who can't. Whether it be for one of the victims of the bombing or for someone who has CP like me but is wheelchair bound.
I hope you will consider giving to this very worthy cause. So many people were affected that morning in April 1995. Your donation will go completely to the OKC National Memorial & Museum Fund. Thank you for your time and consideration.
