I'm tired. I'm getting old. I have more gray hair than any 46 year-old deserves. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad I have hair, mainly because it gives everyone something to talk about.
Why am I tired? This marks the 15th consecutive year that I have trained for the Chicago Marathon with the Opportunity Enterprises team. I was one of the original 65 team members in 1999, taking a challenge from Jackie Sturgell to join the team. Well, I made it that year and I was immediately hooked. I never thought I'd run the marathon every year for 15 years. At the time, it was a small goal that I had to complete a marathon because my dad had run a few back in the 1980s. This will be my 20th overall. I'm one of about five people from that original 65 who have been on the team every year. I'm certainly proud of that, but all good things must come to an end.
I'm going to stop my streak at 15 and take off next year. I will still run in some capacity, but I won't be on the OE team next year. I've been waking up at 5:30 a.m. just about every summer day since 1999 to get in my daily mileage. Every day can be a challenge, but I've persevered.
So this is the last year that I'm going to ask my friends and family to support the OE cause by making a donation on my behalf. OE does amazing things for its clients and has been doing so for more than 45 years. It's a non-profit organization and it always seems the state is cutting funding for one reason or another. So if you can find it in your heart, and wallet, to make a donation to Opportunity Enterprises on my behalf, I would greatly appreciate it. And so would the clients.
Thank you for your support, now and in the past.
