I began running in 2002, and always wanted to run a marathon. I wanted to complete a marathon so badly that I actually began having a dream every night where I just ran, ran, and ran! After about a month of having that dream, I got a letter from one of the charities of the Chicago Marathon, and they asked me to run to raise money, which I did. The next year, I started running for Opportunity Enterprises, and have been running ever since! I have run 23 marathons and 64 half marathons so far, and this will be my 10th marathon with OE.
While I have run with OE nine other times, this year is special for me because I have recently begun receiving services through JobSource, OE’s community-based employment program. I have struggled for many years with depression, and running helps me cope with my sadness and anxiety. When I lost my last job, I was unable to find a new one on my own. After many months of looking and not finding anything, I decided to see if JobSource could help me. From the time I started working with them, they have been so nice to me. They have helped me do my resume and prepare for interviews, and have gotten me some leads on some great jobs. I know that once they help me find an awesome new job, they will also support me as I learn my new position. Now, I’m not only running to raise money for OE, but realize how important OE is to me and others like me who have benefitted from the services it provides.
All donations that I receive this year will directly support growth and development at OE Lakeside and the programs that are, or soon will be, located there – Enriching Possibilities, a curriculum-based program for individuals with moderate to severe disabilities, the Renewed Horizons Adult Day Center, which serves senior adults with special needs, and Daily Living Skills, a program which teaches basic skills to individuals with severe to profound disabilities.
The OE Marathon Team is OE’s largest annual fundraiser. Over the last twelve years, over 3,000 runners have raised more than $1.5 for the organization. Because OE is nearly 75% government funded, it has suffered significant funding cuts recently, which makes it really important for fundraisers like the Marathon Team to raise more money than ever.
Please help me reach my fundraising goal of $1,000 – every dollar helps me get closer to my goal. But more important than my fundraising goal, I want to raise a lot of money to thank OE for helping me with my job search. I can tell you from first-hand experience that OE changes lives every day. I hope you’ll support the great work they do!
Thank you for visiting my site and for your support.
