BENEFITING: Pine Street Inn
ORGANIZER: Pine Street Inn
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
I am very grateful for this chance to run the Boston Marathon for Pine Street Inn. Running a marathon is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and it’s also been a goal of Michael Ferullo, who volunteers as the coach for Pine Street’s Bulldog Running Club.
Last summer I entered Stabilization, Pine Street’s residential treatment program. I had tried to get sober in the past, going into different treatment programs, as well as on my own. I knew I needed to try something different.
Coach Mike started the Bulldog Running Club in 2008 with the belief that running can be an important part of recovery. While I was in the Stabilization program, I joined the club and worked out with Coach Mike during group runs every Saturday morning – even in the snow. He encourages members to be consistent and disciplined with exercise and to work toward goals for conditioning and competitive running. With his coaching and advice, I completed a half marathon this fall in record time.
Today, I have graduated from Stabilization and been clean for more than six months, which is my longest period of sobriety. Coach Mike has been a big reason for this. He has dedicated himself to my training and success and has become my mentor.
It has always been his dream for someone in the Bulldog Running Club to run the Boston Marathon, so the money I raise as part of Pine Street’s marathon team will go toward the running club and the Stabilization program.
Thank you for supporting me in my goal and in honoring Coach Mike for all he has done for me and for hundreds of others he has helped through the Bulldog Running Club.
