BENEFITING: Alliance for the Great Lakes
EVENT DATE: Jul 26, 2015
The Alliance is the oldest Great Lakes organization devoted 100 percent to the lakes. Our professional staff works with scientists, policymakers, businesses, community groups and everyday citizens to protect and restore the world’s largest surface freshwater resource.
From forging forward-looking Great Lakes policies to promoting Great Lakes education to on-the-ground efforts to improve thousands of miles of Great Lakes shoreline, we’ve been out front and behind the scenes caring for the lakes since 1970.
Are you a distance junkie who likes long stretches of remote paddling? If so, this is your segment! We’ll pass south from Presque Isle through miles of unpopulated shoreline to spectacular Thunder Bay. Strewn with shipwrecks, islands and rock shoals, Thunder Bay is a paddling destination unto itself. Be sure to learn about the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary to see what lies in store for you. We’ll find safe harbor and civilization again when we stop in Alpena. Enjoy the restaurants and shoreline parks and stretch your legs at the The Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center to learn all about the rich maritime history of the area. Heading south from Alpena we’ll be treated to more miles of uninterrupted forests along the Negwegon State Park Shoreline, finally arriving at our final destination in Harrisville State Park.
