It's officially marathon training season! I was 12 years old when I started running with my dad. He loved to run and was always out there rain or shine. He taught me running etiquette...run against oncoming traffic, always wave to fellow runners, never be too proud to walk...but unfortunately his shoes were taken away from him far too early. My first marathons I ran for my dad because he couldn't. But last summer while pregnant with Giuliana I considered hanging up my running shoes permanently. I wondered if there was any point to 5am long runs, standing in start lines freezing my a#@ off and fighting through 1000's of people with shaky legs and a queasy stomach at the end of it all, not to mention the skyrocketing entry fees.
And then Giuliana was born. We received her diagnosis 10 days later and blazed ahead eyes wide open. I discovered RDS early on while searching for hope for Giuliana's future. It was all I needed to give me an excuse for more 5 am long runs, freezing cold start lines, and chaotic finish lines. I now run with my dad in my heart and Giuliana on my sleeve. I'm not trying to "cure" Giuliana...there's nothing wrong with her...I'm only trying to do all I can to better her future. I need to do all I can to ensure she has every opportunity available to her without limitations.
Here's more information about the cause:
Research Down Syndrome is the foundation that is changing the course in understanding and treating intellectual disabilities in Down syndrome.
RDS is committed to supporting the identification of the causes of the intellectual impairments associated with Down syndrome and to facilitating the development of pharmacological therapies to improve memory, learning and communication in persons with Down syndrome. Remarkable progress has already been made over a very short time. In fact, a human clinical trial has already begun, less than a decade after the support of private foundations stimulated the progress of Down syndrome cognitive research. Your support will help translate these research initiatives into a reality.
Please join with the RDS Runners as their miles help RDS fund research that already has made extraordinary progress.
