BENEFITING: Read Ahead
ORGANIZER: Read Ahead
EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2014
I'm running the New York City Marathon! 26.2 miles, here I come! But while I've logged countless early mornings, loads of sweaty afternoons, and some random late nights racking up mileage along the Hudson River in Manhattan, it's really my love of reading that got me here.
I'm 32 years old and to this day I can still hear the sound of my second grade teacher cracking open Charlotte's Web. In third grade my teacher read James and the Giant Peach and I remember hanging on to her every word (I even used to mimic the way she licked her fingers before turning a page when I read to my troll dolls at home). In fourth grade it was Superfudge by Judy Blume - I was enthralled.
It's probably because these early mentors were so committed and so enthusiastic that I chose to study English in college, where storytime got slightly more intense - Paradise Lost isn't quite as fun as Superfudge, but still, I enjoyed it.
Also, I think it's because people read to me when I was little that I felt free to think big - after college I came up with the crazy notion of moving to NYC to be a writer. Today I work as a research editor at Vogue, where I basically spend my day reading stories (though not out loud - my cubicle neighbors might kill me).
This is why I'm so honored to team up with Read Ahead - an organization that's devoted to inspiring a love of reading in kids. Through their Power Lunch program, they pair volunteers with underserved children to read together every week. Every year they reach nearly 1,000 students!
All the money I raise during my marathon training goes to this amazing mentoring and literacy program. All donations are tax-deductible and every dollar counts!
Thank you so much for your support! And thanks to everyone who reads to youngsters!
