BENEFITING: BERNIE MAC FOUNDATION INC
EVENT DATE: Oct 13, 2013
In loving memory of Regina Wilson, “Team Regina” will run in the city she grew up in at the 2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. “Team Regina” is running to raise awareness for a rare disease known as Sarcoidosis. Regina was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis at the age of 16 and lived with it for 30 years. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that affects organs in the body as a result of heightened immunity. Meaning, rather than the immune system fighting infection and disease, the immune system overreacts causing damage to the body’s own tissues. The offending agent is believed to most commonly enter the body through inhalation. Specific chemicals and mold have been implicated as possible offenders, but nothing has been confirmed. Most organs in the body can be affected. As Regina experienced, Sarcoidosis most commonly affects the lungs and lymph nodes. Regina and Bernie Mac lost their lives to the same disease. They grew up in the same city and ironically, attended the same school. Grouping these minor commonalities along with the vision his foundation was built on, “Team Regina” chose to raise money for The Bernie Mac Foundation, where they are dedicated to become a beacon of hope to Sarcoidosis patients everywhere. Please join “Team Regina” in the fight against Sarcoidosis by donating to The Bernie Mac Foundation. We very much appreciate your support!
The Bernie Mac Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2007. Dedicated to improving care for Sarcoidosis patients and aggressively working towards prevention, treatment and focusing on individuals who would otherwise not have access to resources. The Bernie Mac Foundation uses funds raised to bridge the gap between medical professionals who treat and the patients who suffer from the disease for ongoing research. They are a part of the puzzle working to solve the mystery of Sarcoidosis, so that patients are treated with the same urgency and care as those who have cancer. The foundation works closely with their partners at the Lung Association, the Foundation for Sarcoidosis research and The Bernie Mac STAR (Sarcoidosis Translational Advanced Research) Center which opened in 2012, located at the University of Illinois, Chicago. These partnerships allow the Bernie Mac Foundation to be the cog in disseminating the proper information and resources where they need to be. They strive to stay on the leading edge of scientific research and education, with the hope that patients will receive benefits of the most advanced cutting-edge research and treatment options currently available for Sarcoidosis patients.
