I am inviting each and every one of you to be a part of my journey in crossing the NYC ING finish-line on November 4th in beautiful Central Park, New York City!
My starting line IS NOT the 5:30a.m. jam packed and filthy Staten Island bound MTA bus which drops me off in the freezing cold only to be funneled into the “BlueWave" and corralled like cattle awaiting slaughter, for the last starting time of 10:55a.m.
My starting line was August 1st 2007 when I quit smoking a pack of Newport cigarettes per day and lost 35lbs by running and doing triathlons. In 2010 I received an email for an entry to the NYC Marathon and all I had to do was raise $5K for the Robin Hood Foundation. I had no idea what Robin Hood was or stood for and I did not care. All I knew was that I was going to get a race bid and run the NYC Marathon, for me!
But in my time spent raising money and participating in team runs, I started to get a better understanding of what Robin Hood was all about. All of a sudden I was not running to lose weight or any other personal goal, for me it became about helping the less fortunate. It was a great feeling when race time came and I was running through the streets of Brooklyn in my funny looking Robin Hood hat with groups of kids in Bedford Stuyvesant cheering and thanking me, knowing that it was because of the money we rose to truly help those kids.
Robin Hood funds and partners with programs such as Coalition for the Homeless which I had the opportunity to participate in first hand. On Wednesday night I handed over 340 meals out to hungry New Yorkers.(my job was putting soup in the bag) Unlike a traditional soup kitchen we brought food to where street homeless families live. Our driver Brian told us that every night in New York City 1.4 million New Yorkers rely on emergency food and coalition meets this challenge head on, every night of the year. With the help of volunteers like me, Brian was able to focus on outreach and support while we distributed the food. Its all about getting them help and off the street. Its not about the food. The FOOD IS THE GATEWAY TO RECOVERY.
Please support me on Marathon day while I run for the Robin Hood charity in the effort to end hunger and get them off the street in NYC.
