It's not New York, but....
As many of you know, my goal to finish my first marathon (and hopefully, in the process, qualify for the Boston Marathon) has shifted about 90 miles south..to Philly! When the NY Marathon was cancelled last weekend, I was fortunate enough to snag one of the last remaining spots in the Philadelphia Marathon to run with TEAM RTR. So, not only will my training not go to waste, but I also get to help an organization that has a mission I care about passionately: fighting cancer.
Racing To Register (www.racingtoregister.org) is a 501c3 registered charity whose main goal is to inspire people to join the national bone marrow registry and, in doing so, fight blood cancers. TEAM RTR is a program within the charity whereby anyone can participate in any endurance sport event and also educate people on why it is critical to increase the size of the potential donor base. Consider:
- Each year, more than 120,000 people die from blood cancers
- Only 40% of those in need find a match
- There are only 9 million people in the entire registry
- Leukemia is the #1 child disease killer
- Joining the Registry is free: it only takes a swab of the inside of your cheek
RTR doesn't charge donors to register but it costs money to provide educational materials. Money raised also helps support RTR CARES. This is a program that grants wishes to families and children who are going through the transplant process.
In fact, next year RTR CARES will host its first online auction, so if you have a good idea of something the charity may auction, let me know!
Thanks so much for the support and for helping save lives!
See you at the finish line on November 18th!
