March 10, 2016
BENEFITING: Free To Run Inc.
EVENT DATE: Feb 14, 2016
Completing an ultramarathon is an extreme challenge even with the best preparation. For three young athletes training in Afghanistan, it is almost impossible. For the last few months, Kubra, Arzoo and Mahdi have been battling insecurity, street harassment and pollution as they run through the streets and hills around Kabul. In February, they will attempt to become the first mixed gender team from Afghanistan to participate in a 250 kilometer / 155 mile, 7-day, stage race (www.4deserts.com/beyond/srilanka).
Kubra, Arzoo and Mahdi will race together under the name Team Sahra, which means ‘desert’ in Dari. The team was selected, trained, and supported by Free to Run, a non-profit organization that uses sport and fitness to empower women and girls from conflict-affected communities.
The Team's race entries were generously sponsored by Racing the Planet / 4Deserts! But this fundraiser will go a long way towards covering the costs of Team Sahra's training and participation in the race... and inspiring athletes across Afghanistan! The funds raised will cover:
- transportation stipends for training in the mountains around Kabul
- plane travel
- sports gear (shoes, training and race clothing, backpacks, sleeping bags and all of the mandatory kit!)*
- food including halal dehydrated meals
- medical appointments
- Electronic Travel Authorizations
- travel within Sri Lanka
All donations made to Free to Run are tax deductible in the United States! Free to Run is a registered 501(c)(3) charity in the US.
*Gear is being borrowed where possible
