Thank you for visiting the 2013 Samaritans Marathon homepage. Our Team is raising awareness and funds for Samaritans, Inc, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the incidence of Suicide in Greater Boston and Metrowest. I am honored to run the Boston Marathon on behalf of the Good Samaritans. I got involved with the good Samaritans 4 years ago; my team, Team Muffin has participated in the 5k Run/Walk for Someone Else’s life. In the past 4 years, we have raised nearly $14 thousand dollars to help in the fight against suicide. My involvement with the Good Samaritans has changed my life for the better. Knowing that we are raising money and awareness for suicide prevention will make running a marathon an incredibly rewarding accomplishment.
This will be my first time running a marathon. I will be running the distance in memory of my mother, Laurel Drummond “Muffin” Lyons M.D. She took her life on July 29th 1994. This is a day I will never forget and I am sure a lot of people can say the same. Muffin was a woman of many talents. She had her own medical practice into which she invested her heart and soul. She was a well accomplished doctor; she was named a co-recipient of the “Physicians of the Year” award by the New Hampshire Hospital Association. She treated her patients as if they were family. She was a wife and a mother of two. She spent her spare time, when there was any, cooking, taking care of her horses, sewing and in her garden. I think of her as “Simply Marvelous,” her favorite phrase and so appropriate to describe her.
I have lost an important person in my life to suicide. She played a significant role in many other lives as well. Please help me and my marathon team so we can raise awareness and help in the fight against suicide. Saving one life could potentially save many lives.
Please spread the word…I appreciate all your help and support!
No matter how you decide to contribute, please know that your support will help ensure that our confidential and anonymous befriending services remain available to the members of our community who are feeling lonely, desperate and suicidal. Thank you so much!
