Please join me, Kate and the kids for Safe Haven's Hike for the Homeless. It is a fun event that offers plenty to entertain the children, and it benefits a great cause. After the short hike, there is food, a band and children activities (rock wall, face painting, arts and crafts, etc.). My kids always have a great time and we would love to have you join us.
For those of you who do not know, Safe Haven Family Shelter provides shelter, counseling and other comprehensive services to homeless families in Nashville. It is the only homeless shelter of its kind in Middle Tennessee that services the entire family unit. While almost all other shelters must separate families at night by sex, Safe Haven allows parents to stay together with their children in the same space. Can you imagine being a single mother under economic duress and you must send your little boy by himself into a gymnasium to sleep with a bunch of random homeless men? Then, in the morning, you must send him off to school where he is expected to perform at the same level as his peers. This is one of the many reasons why the traditional shelters are not feasible options for homeless families, which make up over 30% of the homeless population.
In addition to shelter, Safe Haven provides counseling and instruction to the parents and children to address the effects and the roots of the problems that led to their desperate situation. The organization has an amazing success rate (over 80%) with helping families experiencing difficult circumstances get back on their feet and achieving lasting self-sufficiency. More information about Safe Haven can be found at http://safehaven.org/.
Whether or not you can join us during the hike, please consider joining in spirit by supporting with a donation. As a member of the board and the executive committee, I am expected to raise money, so please help if you can! Go to https://www.crowdrise.com/TeamSevierHIkeforHomeless and click “Donate.” (Note that the website company is attempting to add a 10% “Optional Processing Fee” that can be removed by clicking “Edit” when you confirm the donation.)
Thank you for any help, and thank you if you actually read all the way down to this point.
