THE STORY:

Katie Uva wrote -

My mother, Shelley Uva, died from pancreatic cancer on November 5, 2011. Her death was a terrible tragedy for her, and for her friends and family. But Mom always led by example, and she was a person who knew how important it was to make peace with life's challenges, to learn from them, and whenever possible to make something positive out of them.

So with that in mind, my friend Casey and I will be running the NYC Marathon this November. Almost three years to the day that Mom died, we will be running in her honor, and enlisting the support of those who knew her and loved her to continue the larger fight against pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is the 12th most common type of cancer, but the 4th deadliest--it is estimated that of the 46,000 Americans diagnosed each year, 85% die within a year of their diagnosis, with 95% dying within 5 years. This is  disturbing news--but that's where we come in. In many ways, we're at the beginning of a long battle when it comes to pancreatic cancer. We need better  and more frequent screenings so people can be diagnosed earlier. Once people are diagnosed earlier, there will be more room to discover the most effective surgical and non-surgical approaches to treating and managing this disease. And hopefully someday in the not-too-distant future, pancreatic cancer will, like many other cancers, have a greatly improved survival rate. With your help, we can make this happen! Thank you for your support!
