BENEFITING: ORANGE COUNTY BAR FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: ORANGE COUNTY BAR FOUNDATION
Dear Friends and Colleagues, on Sunday, May 5, 2013, I will be supporting a great cause in the OC Marathon…my mentee!! My mentee is 16 years and attends a local school in Santa Ana. I’ve been mentoring her for about two years now but she has been involved with the Bar Foundation since she was in 6th grade. The Bar Foundation have provided her with two years of afterschool programming for girls in our Chicas Con Fuerza program and individual counseling which I might add she requested this service herself….not a common thing for teens to ask for. Since then she has been volunteering her time in our Student Advisory Group called the OC Mentors.
My mentee has gone from ditching class to the point she where she was failing her classes, stealing, smoking and drinking to now going to school every day and getting mostly B, C and some A’s and now the ASB president!!(Just found out today!). There are still many challenges in her life that quite honestly are not in her control to change such as her alcoholic father, drugs dealers , gangs and violence literally at the footsteps of her home. I know that if she just lived in a different area her life could be much different but she is staying strong and striving every day to have a better life.
So, when she says things like “ I feel safe here at OCBF” , “ Kids like me need more people like you” and “ I don’t know what I would do without OCBF”…is where I get my motivation to wake up every Saturday morning to help her train for the OC Marathon.(And those who know me well, I am not morning person!)
Our goal was to do the ½ Marathon but realized that a 5K is an accomplishment for my mentee given that she could barely run a mile before we started. She has gain a self confidence that I hadn’t seen before and most importantly she is learning how to stay sober and be healthy.
I am not a runner but I’m doing this for her and for all the youth we serve who share the same story.
I ask you to show your support for my involvement and most importantly my mentee by making a $26 donation for SHORTSTOP and all the programs at OCBF.
Join Team SHORTSTOP at the 2013 OC Marathon and help us raise more money than ever before.

SHORTSTOP is a juvenile crime diversion program of the Orange County Bar Foundation and for the past 30 years it has diverted over 15,000 youth from the juvenile justice system. The Foundation’s mission is to keep at-risk youth out of jail, in school, healthy and drug free through education, counseling and mentoring.
Thank you all for your support!
