BENEFITING: Silverlake Conservatory of Music
EVENT DATE: Mar 20, 2011
Come on people - just five bucks to save Music! Make it ten bucks and you are on your way to saving the world!
The Silverlake Conservatory of Music is struggling to keep its doors open and needs help from everyone who has played or even listened to music - this means YOU.
The Conservatory is a non-profit music school dedicated to providing free instruments and lessons to underprivileged kids. Continuing state budget cuts have gutted music and art programs in our schools, leaving these kids without the opportunity of practicing music no matter how great their interest or talent might be. Flea, co-founder of the Conservatory and bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has decided to run in the LA Marathon to help raise funds to keep the school going. Flea is giving back. I'm hoping you will too.
So please, walk by the Starbucks, put down the Red Bull, swear off Doritos for ONE DAY and give that money to a place that literally changes lives.
PS: donating through Crowdrise is incredibly simple and fast. They don’t sell your information and you don’t get spammed afterwards, so no excuses on that account!
Here's what Flea has to say:
Calling Team Silverlake!
I couldn't be more proud to run in the 2011 Honda LA Marathon for Silverlake and with a team of amazing runners.
We've grown so much in the past 10 years. What started out as an effort to bring music programs into schools has grown into a music school in itself offering scholarships to children in the area.
Currently we have over 250 low-income (Title 1) students on scholarship, where they receive free music lessons and an instrument. It costs the Conservatory about $2,000 a year per student, or approximately $175 a month to provide these free music lessons.
The mission of the Conservatory is to facilitate basic music education for the youth of the community (ages 7-17) but all are welcome and encouraged to participate.
Kids need a place to go after school and during weekends where there is a positive influence and music is something that you can just throw yourself into.
Music saved my life and brought me great joy.
