ORGANIZER: SOMARELA FUND INC
EVENT DATE: Nov 04, 2012
As many of you may already know, I'm running the 2012 New York City Marathon in a few short weeks. While running 26 miles isn't something I do every day, I realized that it would be great to take on a big challenge, while at the same time, raising money for an outstanding cause.
Just the sight of me at mile 21 should be enough to donate (yes, there will be photos), but there is also a more important opportunity to make a difference for families that are in need of support. The mission of the Somarela Fund (http://www.somarela.com/) is to advance humanitarian work in southern Africa for families that live in dire poverty, as well as cultivating global citizenship among youth of diverse backgrounds from the U.S. and southern Africa through service-learning trips. Through community service and cooperative experiences, we hope to take down barriers between advantaged and disadvantaged youth and for those of you that are interested, I would love to organize a service learning trip for parents and children in the summer of 2013.
Thank you very much for your support and for the support for Somarela Fund. My goal is to raise $30,000; I will match donated dollars. If I don’t finish first in the overall race, I will match any donated dollars up to $15,000. You will be blown away by what we can accomplish if we hit our $30,000 goal. Please don’t feel any obligation… any amount you can donate is truly awesome.
Wish me luck and I hope to make you proud on November 4th.
Frankie was never known to be very lanky But when it came to trainin' for Marathons there was no hanky-panky
For his runnin' partner Howard, was a wee bit of a coward
To his friend, young Frankie would be quite a menace For Old Howie would now be buyin' several pints of Guinness
Here's to a great run and to a great race For when I'm done.... I'll soar into first place
No not for winnin' the race but for makin the case
For Africa, a very special place
We all, yes all want to do our part Even if Young Frankie is wheeled away in a cart
For Somarela we have built a beautiful team so that incredible African families can fulfill their dream.
(May this poem go on the wall someday in a small pub called Dick Mack's in Dingle, Ireland...my favorite pub in the world -Cheers mates)
Okay...I tear up in sappy movies...I have to admit it. Have you seen "Pay it Forward"...Cheesy...maybe simplistic...but I absolutely bawled on the plane. I tried to act as if I had something caught in my eye, but of course, everyone knew. One kid with a dream changes everyone's lives. One simple premise....if someone does a good deed for you....do three in return...an amazing concept when you think of 1,000....10,000 people doing it.
I have a lot to pay forward from my life particularly for all of you that are supporting me to complete this race. We are going to do something amazing for hundreds of families. We are doing something incredible together and you're teaching me what friendship and community really means. Let's do this thing...let's Pay it Forward and make a difference. I will everything in my power to do you proud on November 4th....
Thank you again for inspiring me and the Somarela team
WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR ME: Edit
I run like the wind (well not really)
I believe that a small group of people can make a giant difference
I think that you should think big and act big
I tear up in sappy movies
i am blown away that my friends have come together to do something amazing for a group of people that really need it.
I am still contemplating running the race in my Big Bird Halloween costume
I know when to cut my losses
