Why would someone in Lincoln, Nebraska run and raise money for South Shore Hospital? Several reasons -- my parents, John and Sandy Emler, live in HIngham and have donated hours to local healthcare and this wonderful hospital -- my Mom as Hospice Volunteer and my Dad in the South Shore Hospital Emergency Department and as an active member of the Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC). I am a very strong believer in patient centered care and having patients help develop, guide, and lead the care they want from their clinics and hospitals. South Shore Hospital's PFAC is an amazing example of what can be accomplished when patients are involved in care delivery. It is an example that we are emulating in the clinic where I work in Lincoln, Nebraska. As the Associate Chief of Medicine at the Lincoln VA, I have the amazing opportunity to work with veteran members of the Veterans' Advisory Council, as we strive to improve the care we deliver to our nations heroes. South Shore Hospital's PFAC has helped show us the way. I also believe that true health includes physical, mental, and spiritual activity. For me, running incorporates all those things. Running helps me be a better mom, wife, friend, daughter, physician, administrator, etc. I hope that all my patients can find something like running that improves their health and well being. Setting a goal to run Boston ( which will hopefully be the 32nd marathon on my way to one in every state), running all the training miles and raising $5,000 for South Shore Hospital's PFAC is an exciting challenge for me. I hope that friends and family will consider donating. $1 a mile is just $26.20, and it will go to a great cause -- helping the Patient Family Advisory Council with all their activities that directly improve the patient experience at South Shore Hospital (and in an indirect, but powerful way, the LIncoln VA's Veterans Advisory Council).
