EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
Friends and Family,
Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey to complete my first Boston Marathon. I was given this great opportunity through South Shore Hospital, a community hospital that I had the pleasure of beginning my career in Emergency Medicine, and along the way making great friendships that have grown over the years. One of which, is with Dr. Elana Dekkers, a team mate for this run of 2013 and the colleague who paved the way to have me join the South Shore Hospital Team!!
As I have been training for this run, I've thought a great deal about myself as a person, mother, sister, daughter, friend, professional and the goals I have set in life, the drive I have to accomplish each goaI and the appreciation I have for those who have helped me along the way. As any runner will agree, the training is both a mental and physical challenge. In my opinion, the mental challenge is by far the hardest feat. One day during a long training run, I was struggling through mile 8 or 9 and was reaching for a reason to keep going, pushing through the tired legs and cold temperature.
My first thought was of a little 8 year old boy, who I never had the pleasure to meet, but feel like I know well because of his mother Becky and father John Barbara. John, a fellow colleague in the department of pharmacy at South Shore hospital and his wife Becky sadly experienced the loss of their son Tanner this past fall. Tanner, was an active althlete, friend, brother and son. His face brings an instant smile to mine with each and every picture that I see. Becky told me "the more people that see his beautiful face the better" and I want to make her wish come true. I will proudly wear a jersey with Tanner's face on it during my race....where else will thousands and thousands of people be able to see the beautiful and cute Tanner.
This year, I could have no greater inspiration and motivation than to run on behalf of the department of pharmacy at South Shore Hospital in the Honor of Tanner J. Barbara. For every mile I run in the 26.2 miles, I will run with Tanner helping me. This year, I want to support the pharmacy department in providing further services to the emergency department at South Shore Hospital and dedicate the donations on behalf of Tanner and the Barbara family, who reside in the same community of South Shore Hospital. Please consider donating to my charity as I know the contribution will be providing great support and exceptional care to the people in our community.
Thank you all who have supported and encouraged me through this journey and training!
