BENEFITING: SOUTH SHORE HEALTH SYSTEM INC.
ORGANIZER: SOUTH SHORE HEALTH SYSTEM INC.
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
In 2013 I will be running my fourth Boston Marathon, having completed the race in 2009, 2010 & 2012. This year I will be running in memory of two special people; my Aunt, Chrystine M. Sullivan, who lost her four and a half year battle to cancer in August of 1999 and Tim Fitzgerald, who was Sullivan Tire Company’s first non-family member to be hired back in 1965. Tim passed in September of 2010 surrounded by his loving family at South Shore Hospital where he was well cared for in his final days. Both of these people left an indelible mark on me and I proudly honor their legacies as part of the South Shore Hospital Boston Marathon Team.
I am also running to raise money for the Cancer Care Center at South Shore Hospital. The Cancer Care Center, in affiliation with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham & Women’s Hospital, provides world class cancer care to the local community due to the unique clinical collaboration between the three organizations. Please join me in supporting the Cancer Care Center and help fight this disease that touches so many lives.
ABOUT CHRYSTINE M. SULLIVAN:
Chrystine (Funder) Sullivan devoted much of her life to bettering the lot of others. She was active in numerous charitable endeavors on both formal and informal levels. When she lost her struggle with cancer, her friends and family immediately took action to continue her fight and started the Chrystine M. Sullivan Foundation. They began building an endowment so that they can support those that live with and fight cancer.
Chrystine believed that all people deserved the same world-class treatment as her and those close to her share her dream for a cure. The Foundation has organized numerous fundraisers including an annual walk with the Brockton Hospital Foundation, Holiday Plays at the Company Theatre, and a Dinner Dance. Additionally, generous friends such as Rick Burke from McLaughlin Chevrolet have organized events to support the Foundation.
The Foundation continues to grow and has been featured in local newspapers. We thank all those that have supported the Foundation.
ABOUT TIM FITZGERALD:
Tim was born in Limerick, Ireland son of the late Hugh and Bridget (Ryan) Fitzgerald and was raised and educated there. He came to the United States in 1965 settling in Rockland and resided there until his passing. Tim worked tirelessly at Sullivan Tire Company for 45 years. At the time of his retirement he was serving as a consultant to the company. He was also one of the founding members of Rockland Youth Soccer. Mr. Fitzgerald will be fondly remembered as a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and brother. Tim had an upbeat, positive outlook on life and served as an unofficial mentor and coach to several generations of Sullivan Tire employees. His legacy lives on at the company through his two daughters, Eileen & Josephine, who are both department managers and his grandson Nick Martino, who works in the distribution department.
