BENEFITING: TRAGEDY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR SURVIVORS
ORGANIZER: TRAGEDY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR SURVIVORS
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
On November 6, 2016, I will be running with Team TAPS in their inaugural TCS New York City Marathon. The TAPS mission is to remember and honor fallen service members, while raising funds to provide compassion, comfort and hope to surviving families and loved ones. I am especially grateful to have been given the opportunity to run in honor and in memory of the life and legacy of Lt. Florence Bacong Choe.
In May of 2008, Florence volunteered for duty to Camp Mike Spann in northern Afghanistan, where she mentored the Afghans as they devised their healthcare system for their army. While there, she also formed a library and set up the camp's 'United Through Reading' program, which allowed military personnel to read stories to their children on DVDs. On March 27, 2009, while out on an afternoon jog, Florence and another Navy officer were shot and killed by an Afghan National Army soldier, who then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide. Florence was only 35.
Although I did not know Florence personally, her story hit home for me. Not only was she of Filipino descent, a native San Diegan within my social circle and born and raised into the military, Florence was a loving mother to her then 3 year-old daughter Kristen and wife to LCDR, Dr. Jay Choe; a loyal daughter, sister and relative; a good friend to many; and a highly-respected comrade and colleague. Florence's service, bravery and ultimate sacrifice for our country, her family and other military families, has truly inspired me.
Thus, with great pride and respect, on behalf of Team TAPS, I will run 26.2 miles at the 2016 TCS NYC Marathon in remembrance of the life and legacy of Lt. Florence Bacong Choe. So that TAPS may continue to be instrumental in the recovery of survivors, as they had for both Kristen and Jay Choe, your consideration in donating to this great cause would be deeply appreciated. Thank you all, in advance, for your support and encouragement during my journey!
