BENEFITING: The Children's Room
ORGANIZER: The Children's Room
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
When I first met Ron I was living in NY and he was in Boston – we had a long distance relationship which spanned a year with each of us traveling by Trump shuttle (thank goodness for the under 25 discounts!). I can vividly remember that first time watching the Boston Marathon – what a thrill it was to watch these runners. I remember telling Ron, “One day that will be me and you’ll be watching me on the sideline.” Although Ron was never on the sidelines, he has been with me for each and every run since then, and it is his name and picture that crosses the finish line with me each and every time.
After Ron died, I chose to run the Boston Maraton for Dana Farber – the place that helped him, that gave him hope and exceptional care. This year, I am running (figuratively!) a different course and supporting The Children’s Room, a place that is near and dear to my heart and supports children and their families after a loss of a sibling or a parent.
After Ron died our family was very fortunate to be supported by the strength of family, friends and community. Along the way, I met other young widows and widowers and the shared connection was instant – this was a common bond that we wish we didn’t have but nevertheless made it easy for us to relate; we shared our concerns, our trials, and we found that we could lean on one another.
For Arielle, Andy, Sydney and Teddy, their loss was a private one not easily shared with friends or adults around them. I had heard about the Children’s Room through friends who had used their services, but had not explored the opportunity until my mother-in-law Linda encouraged me and Arielle to see the Teen Performance Troupe. We sat riveted, hearing about their shared loss through songs and personal stories, which gave us a glimpse of the holes in their hearts.
For Arielle, this would mark the beginning of her personal journey at The Children’s Room. Performing in the Teen Troupe gave Arielle a sense of purpose; she made friends with individuals who understood her, she used her voice and her passion for music to express those needs, and – above all – in many ways it brought her closer to her Dad.
My own involvement with The Children’s Room has also grown, as I have recently joined the Board of Directors. I have met incredible people at the Children’s Room – they embrace you, they are there for you, and above all they are there for the many children and families who have walked through the doors of that special house in Arlington.
I’m running the 2013 Boston Marathon for those families and others like them – to give them the opportunity to experience the care and compassion that Arielle received, and to let them know they are not alone. I’m also running for my daughter Arielle, as the Children’s Room was the place who gave her spirit, hope, and warmth.
Please consider helping me reach my fundraising goal of $10,000. To make a secure donation to my fundraising page, click the donation button on the top right of this page. You may also send checks to The Children’s Room at 1210 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington, MA 02476. Please make your check out to "The Children's Room" and write “Marathon/Nanci” in the memo line so that your gift will count towards my goal.
On behalf of my family, I’d like to thank each of you for being there for all of us and supporting us on this journey.
