THE STORY:

THE HUMANE SOCIETY VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION INC wrote -

"My biggest take-away from RAVS was that these trips are so much more than providing charitable services to impoverished communities. I used to believe that pet owners who lacked the financial means to provide top-level veterinary care were inherently irresponsible and doing a disservice to their animals. However, after witnessing the patience of clients who waited for hours to get appointments, the dedication of owners who meticulously organized records from years of RAVS vaccine clinics, and the gratitude that transcended all cultural barriers from families we served, I have a better understanding of service medicine. I see now that a lack of resources does not imply a lack of commitment to animal care, and I am proud to work with an organization that goes out of its way to provide medical services and client education to the communities that need it most." ~Yuan Kang, Class of 2017, Cornell Univerity College of Veterinary Medicine

In July of 2015, HSVMA-RAVS staff and volunteers will travel to northern North Dakota for 5 days of field clinics on the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation and then head south for 5 more days of field clinics on the Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux Reservation. The team of 30 veterinary students and 15 professional volunteers will offer free spay/ neuter and wellness care to more than 1,000 animals in these remote communities where regular veterinary care is not available.

In addition to wellness services, RAVS’ volunteers will care for animals with a wide range of health concerns including puppies suffering from parvovirus and distemper infections and older animals suffering from multiple infirmities. We will help animals with old traumatic injuries and festering wounds, returning them to a happier life with their family. While providing this care, our volunteers and staff will be educating the family on animal care and public health, helping to make the community a better place for the animals and the people of Turtle Mountain and Cheyenne River.
