BENEFITING: AIDS Foundation of Chicago
ORGANIZER: AIDS Foundation of Chicago
EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2014
As I sit here typing this, I notice my dog in the corner playing with an old pair of underwear and having the time of her life. It's as humorous as it sounds. It's little moments like these that not only bring joy to my life, but also make me realize how great it must be to live so carefree. Now I am not naive enough to believe that people can live a completely simple and carefree life, afterall we are humans and it is our nature to make things complicated. However, I do believe that by doing my part, I can help some out there worry a little less, and enjoy life a little more.
This year I will be running my third World Marathon Major, and first TCS NYC Marathon on behalf of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. Many of you who have supported me in the past will remember that I ran on behalf of the same charity in 2013 when I ran the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. While the location of the event may have changed this year, the urgency and needs of those living with HIV/AIDS have not.
As a man living with HIV/AIDS, I know how depressing it can be living under a constant cloud of apprehension, always worrying about your health. I have been fortunate enough to have a strong support system around me, that helps me lead a healthy and extraordinary life; however, there are many who do not have that same fortune. With state budgets being cut on what seems to be an annual basis, those depending on state programs to assist them with this chronic illness, are all-too-often finding themselves having to go without. Additionally, a CDC estimated 1 in 6 unaware people are living with HIV/AIDS; therefore, not receiving treatment and potentially transmitting the virus to others.
Now I don't want to depress you with talk of doom and gloom; however, this is the reality of the situation. Fortunately, there have been great strides made in the scientific and medical communities, as well as non-profits such as the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, that give us glimmers of hope. While the people working tirelessy behind these organizations have made much progress, none of it can be accomplished without financial support.
With your donation and pledge of support, the people behind the breakthroughs in HIV/AIDS research, those providing social services, and countless others, can continue their work and ensure a brighter future for us all. Maybe then, those living with HIV/AIDS will enjoy a life with one less worry, and they too can have the time of their lives playing with an old pair of underwear...or whatever it is that may entertain them. :)
