BENEFITING: TRAVIS MANION FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Oct 27, 2013
On October 27, 2013, I will be running the Marine Corps Marathon to support the Travis Manion Foundation, as part of Team Travis and Brendan. Travis and Brendan were roommates at the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 2004.
On April 29, 2007, 1st Lt. Travis Manion made the ultimate sacrifice in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. He, his fellow Marines, and Iraqi Army counterparts were ambushed while searching a suspected insurgent house. Travis led the counterattack against the enemy forces. He was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper while aiding and drawing fire away from his wounded comrades. His selfless actions allowed every member of his patrol to survive.
On missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, Navy SEAL LT Brendan Looney wore two personal items — his wedding ring and a metal wrist band Travis' parents gave him to commemorate his friend. Tragically, on Sept. 21, 2010, Brendan died in a helicopter accident in the Zabul province in Southern Afghanistan while supporting a special operations mission.
Now, these two heroes lie interned side-by-side at Arlington National Cemetery. "Warriors for freedom, brothers forever."
The Travis Manion Foundation continues Travis’ mission of inspiring selfless service and assisting our nation’s veterans and families of Fallen Heroes. Please visit their website to learn about the important work they are doing for our veterans and to honor our fallen. www.travismanion.org.
