BENEFITING: TRAVIS ROY FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: TRAVIS ROY FOUNDATION
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
Many of you are aware of my longstanding committment and affections for this important cause. My connection to Travis and his foundation dates to 2005 when I traveled to Burlington, Vermont to participate in the Vermont Wiffle Ball Tournament. I've been back each August to partake in the magic of what has become the Foundation's largest fundraiser each year. This year, I am extremely proud to represent the Foundation throughout the months of training and the 26 miles from Hopkinton to Boston in April.
The Travis Roy Foundation was started in 1997 by Travis Roy and his family to raise money and awareness for other quadriplegics and paraplegics and to support research for a cure. Travis received an outpouring of public support after a freak paralyzing injury playing ice hockey in his first varsity game for the then NCAA champions Boston University Terriers. In an effort to give back, Travis created a tax-exempt charitable entity to raise money for others. Travis has shown the same leadership skills running a multifaceted charity as he did on the ice. The Travis Roy Foundation is recognized by state and federal authorities as a publicly supported tax-exempt entity. It is supported through the generosity of individuals, foundations, corporations; its signature events are organized and overseen by volunteers.
Funds raised by the Foundation are used (1) to support grants for adaptive equipment, renovations, computers and other means to allow survivors of paralyzing injuries to move on with their lives and (2) to support research for a cure.
