Hello everyone!

I am finally running my dream race, the Boston Marathon, for the United Way Team! Thank you for your support by visiting my crowdrise site. I am asking my friends to help others in need by donating to United Way on my behalf. Any donation is greatly appreciated, and I will be running to represent you as my sponsors!

Over the past three years, I have molded myself into a distance runner. My initial motivation came from the TV show, “Biggest Loser”. Through training and dedication, these contestants completed a full marathon. I thought to myself; if they can do that, then I can too! My first race was a half marathon in Kansas City, in 2009.  Crossing that finish line, I said I would never do that again. That moment passed, and I ended up running plenty of half marathons since then. In December of 2010, I ran the St. Jude Marathon in Memphis, which was a full marathon.

I have a lofty goal to run at least a half marathon in every state. So far, I have made it to nine states. My second full marathon will be in Oklahoma City on April 29, so I have been training for that. You can imagine my excitement when I got the chance to run in the Boston Marathon for one of my favorite charities. For a person who said they would never run a half marathon again, here I am running two full marathons within two weeks!

For all of you who continue to give to others in need, your generous support gives meaningful, lasting change that impacts everyone in our community. Give. Advocate. Volunteer. LIVE UNITED. Together, we can achieve more than we ever could alone. Thank you all!

 Training update 2/25/2012 – 3/1/2012

  • Enjoyed a nice 16 mile training run through the streets and parks of Kansas City on Saturday afternoon. I made it home just in time for the tip off of the Kansas vs Missouri basketball game.
  • Bought a new pair of running shoes after wearing a hole in the toe of my favorite pair.  Good thing I got those last 16 miles out of them.
  • Speed endurance workout on the treadmill to make sure the new shoes would work.
  • Yoga!  This is a must for my body to be prepared to run this marathon for the United Way.
  • Tonight it is going to be a 10 mile run at marathon pace in 60 degree weather.

Training update 3/2/2012 – 3/9/2012

  • Ran 12 miles on Sunday morning then went to the Kansas City Symphony.  I just mainly wanted to go and see the new performing Arts Center and couldn’t pass up free tickets.
  • I have been very lucky with the weather and my training the past few months.  Tuesday was a different story. I was running endurance sprints into 30 mph winds with gust up to 40.  It felt like I was running in a wind tunnel and my hair was completely in knots when I was finished.
  • Went to yoga on Wednesday and didn’t feel like it was a good session for me. My legs were really tight from sprints the day before so I need to try to do more stretching everyday.
  • My car was in shop on Thursday so I ran six miles to pick it up after work. It was a good run and a totally different route than I had ever ran before. Don’t worry  I always carry my pepper spray when I run at night.
  • Friday is my rest day. To celebrate it I am going to the Big 12 women’s basketball tournament that is going on just a few blocks from work.

Training update 3/10/2012 – 3/16/2012

  • Saturday was an 18 mile run on a very warm day in Kansas City.  I had to stop twice to fill up my water bottles.  People in McDonalds and in the bowling alley that I went into to fill up my water were looking at me pretty funny.  I must have looked rough running that day.  To celebrate the end of the training run I took an ice bath.  Yes, it was as much fun as it sounds.
  • Weather has been awesome here all week.  So, I did some cross-training and finally took my road bike out for a 10 mile ride.
  • Tuesday I did double duty.  Morning - crossfit workout.  Evening – 3 x 1 mile repeats.
  • My rest day was a very welcome event.  Legs were still tired from all the work last week and this week.
  • Thursday will be yoga right after work and then a 10 mile run.  The only good about daylight savings time is being able to run with the sun still up.  I do miss my hour of sleep, but I’m adjusting pretty quickly.

Training update 3/17/2012 – 3/23/2012

  • My celebration of St. Patty’s Day included a 13 mile run.
  • Sunday was leg recover day so I hit the weights for the upper body and have been sore all week from it.
  • Monday - long stretching session at home
  • Tuesday – Endurance sprints on the treadmill so I watch tv and not run in the rain
  • Wednesday – Yes!!!!!! Yoga class.
  • Thursday – Ran 8 miles in light rain

 Training update 3/24/2012 - 3/30/2012

  • My Sunday Funday started with running 20 miles that morning.  It got really warm and I had to keep stopping to fill up my water bottles.  Made it home in plently of time to take an ice bath and recover some and watch Kansas make it to the Final Four.
  • After a day of rest, on Tuesday I took on the treadmill for endurance sprints.  The weather was nice and I should have been running outside, but the "Biggest Loser" tv show keep me indoors.
  • When to a yoga class and found out just how tight my legs were.
  • 5 mile hilly run to end the week.

Training update 3/31/2012 - 4/6/2012

  • Ran 13 miles on a very hot Sunday morning.
  • Easy 3 mile jog before flag football practice on Tuesday.
  • I'm driving to Arkansas for a long weekend with my family and friends and need to get in two training runs at some point.
  • Did a 6 mile run along the Arkansas River on Thursday.

Training update 4/7/2012 - 4/13/2012

  • While in Arkansas visiting my family and friends did a few hikes in one of the many State Parks.
  • This week I had planned to take it easy.  Went to flag fooball scrimmage on Monday and was feeling good getting in some short sprints in the game, until I got cleated on my right ankle.  I be running a little slower on Monday now.
  • Yoga was missed last week and I could tell. Another great class and I'm very lucky to have a class a few blocks from my house.
  • Treated myself to a massage to get ready.
  • Now its time to pack and head to Boston!!! Check back for pictures from the race.

 Thank you!!

I finally ran my dream race! This was the hardest thing I have ever done. I was able to finish knowing that I had family, friends, and co-workers supporting me and watching my progress online. I have two friends currently battling cancer right now, and knowing what they are going through, I wanted to finish this race for them.
