People say that you can choose your friends, but are given your family. There were six of us “Coffee” kids growing up and the greatest gift we were ever given was each other. Nothing and no one can come between us. We share each other’s joys and sorrows. Our spouses, children and grandchildren are loved and cherished by us all.
Now one of our own, Laurie has ovarian cancer. If we could, we would each take some of her pain, but we can’t, that’s not up to us. What we can and will do is be there for her, whenever and wherever we can.
We have had tea parties at the hospital, with Laurie just stirring her cup. She is not allowed to drink it. We covered the walls of her hospital room with family photos, notes and homemade drawings. We try to make sure she is never alone, sometimes she sends us home. She knows our lives are busy. Laurie is always the first person to offer to help out, but now it is her turn.
We will continue to be there for her, as long as it takes. That is what our family does.
