BENEFITING: Daraja Education Fund
ORGANIZER: Daraja Education Fund
EVENT DATE: May 17, 2015
Daraja Academy is an all-girls secondary boarding school for Kenyan girls with top academic scores and exceptional leadership skills but no means to continue their education. The academy provides shelter, food, healthcare and counseling services which allows students to focus on their academic and personal potential, without being hindered by the everyday barriers of poverty.
"I will be an entrepeneur."
Zaituna and her two brothers were raised by their grandmother since her father lives far away from them and their mother works all day. If it weren’t for Daraja, Zaituna would have been married young since it is rare for girls in her culture to be single past the age of fifteen.
Zaituna is focused on making the most out of her opportunity to attend Daraja and is interested in many things. Her favorite subjects are History, English, and Business and she loves to learn about social issues. In her free time, she loves to read mystery novels and dance. Her favorite times during the week are WISH (Women of Integrity, Strength, and Hope) class and clubs time, where she gets to participate in the Science and Conservation Club. When asked what her favorite part about Daraja is, she reports that she cannot decide, she loves it all.
Please consider supporting Zaituna as she runs to raise money for her own education on May 17th in Kenya, while many Daraja supporters are running in the annual San Francisco Bay to Breakers race in solidarity.
Separated by an ocean. United by a cause.
Three years ago we raised $2030, two years ago we raised $940, last year we raised $20 for Daraja Academy. This is not a trend I like to see.
It is time for the big annual Bay to Breakers fund raiser and this year is special, because I actually know Zaituna. She was my point person on our last visit.
She is a funny, mature, dedicated and compassionate young woman who will do many great things. Like many of the Daraja girls, this school has been a beacon for her and I am asking you, my friends and family, who know how much this school means to me, to help continue to support it.
We need your help to keep it running. This Bay to Breakers Crowdrise campaign is personal. It is about you taking a few minutes and sharing a few dollars to help the school continue to do amazing work. Any amount is appreciated and useful. So please donate and share with your friends and family.
